Given Clint Dempsey’s his recent goal-scoring form, it’s entirely possible that he’ll catch and pass Landon Donovan for the all-time scoring record during the Gold Cup. (As of today, Dempsey’s 56 international goals are one fewer than Donovan’s 57.) If he does, it will be an amazing feat in part because of how recently many of those goals were scored.
When Donovan last played for the USMNT in late 2014, Dempsey was already 31 years old and had to make up an 18-goal gap. At that point, Dempsey’s most productive calendar year had been the eight goals he scored in 2013 (coincidentally the year Donovan took his sabbatical).
