Seahawks News: Playoff Success Helping Pay Off Seattle's Kingdome Debt

The recent success of the Seattle Seahawks is doing a lot more to help to city than providing a great sense of pride - they're helping pay off the city's debt for the Kingdome.

The Kingdome has been out of existence for almost 15 years, but King County and the city of Seattle still owe money stemming from roof repairs in 1994. That debt will likely be paid back early because of how much money the Seahawks' success has brought to the city, according to the county budget director.

With all the extra playoff games the Seahawks have played in recent years, King County has banked a 15.6 percent surplus from the hotel/motel tax, 17 percent higher than the forecasted hotel/motel revenue.

The Kingdome used to house the Seahawks, Seattle Mariners, and Seattle Sonics. The Seahawks moved into CenturyLink Field, their current home, in 2002. The Mariners moved into Safeco Field in 1999, while the Sonics left the Kingdome in 1985 to play in KeyArena before they moved to Oklahoma City in 2008.
