Sporcle Friday: Mariner hitters with the highest walk rate

One of the skills that I disproportionately love in a baseball player is a high walk rate. There are few skills as valuable as simply getting on base, as few things as detrimental as giving away outs.

It’s no secret that Mariners outfielder Jake Fraley is off to a ridiculous start. His batting average of .256 is decent, sure but his on base percentage is an incredible .439. That OBP is buoyed, of course, by a walk rate of 23.7%.

Unless Fraley is the second coming of Edgar Martínez (he isn’t), that walk rate isn’t sustainable. If he kept it up over the course of the season, it would be by far the highest walk rate ever recorded by a Mariner, and one of the top 10 of all time.
