The Mariners gave somebody other than Fernando Rodney a chance to close on Saturday night. Carson Smith passed with flying colors, completing a perfect inning to record his first career save and wrap up Seattle's first win in eight tries.
What does it means for the Mariners closer position?
The answer: It's complicated.
The M's will go with a closer committee for the time being, giving Rodney time to figure out what has contributed to a disastrous 2015 season so far.
"I think it's an opportunity to clean Fernando up and get some things straightened out from a mechanical standpoint," manager Lloyd McClendon said.
