Member of Mariners Hometown Nine Honored for Community Service on MLK Day

Joy Wilde, a member of the Mariners Hometown Nine Inaugural Class, is to be honored today by the City of Tacoma as one of the recipients of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Awards.

12-year old Joy Wilde is to receive the Emerging Leader Award, which recognizes individuals who are 30 years of age or younger. The selection panel had this to say about Joy:

“Her name says it all. Reading her story brought us joy. Ms. Wilde is truly an emerging leader in Tacoma. She is barely a teenager but we can all learn from her example of channeling trauma from tragedy into something positive, and also for using her passion for sports and softball as a platform to have conversations about race, and inspire other young women to do the same.
