Mariners' WC hopes take a hit vs. Yankees

SEATTLE -- Masahiro Tanaka continued his mastery of the Mariners on Friday as the Yankees drove another dagger into Seattle's slim playoff hopes with a 4-0 victory in the series opener at Safeco Field.

Tanaka allowed just three hits over eight innings and is now 7-0 with a 2.02 ERA in eight career starts against the Mariners. The 29-year-old right-hander struck out a season-high 10 and didn't issue a walk.

James Paxton struck out eight and allowed only five hits in his six-inning start for Seattle, but two of the hits were two-run homers by Gleyber Torres and Andrew McCutchen.
