Mariners sign Steve Cishek to a two-year contract to fill the closer role

The Mariners officially announced the signing of free agent reliever Steve Cishek to a two-year contract on Monday morning. News of the signing first broke on Friday.

While the Mariners don’t release the details of the contract, sources confirmed that Cishek will make $4 million in 2016 and $6 million in 2017. The contract also includes up to $7 million in total incentives. To make room on the 40-man roster for Cishek, left-hander Rob Rasmussen was designated for assignment.

Cishek will vie for closing duties along with veteran reliever Joaquin Benoit in the Mariners’ revamped bullpen.

“Steve gives us a proven bullpen presence with significant experience closing games,” manager Jerry Dipoto said.
