Mariners reliever Charlie Furbush to have surgery on rotator cuff

After his latest setback rehabbing from biceps tendinitis and other shoulder issues, Mariners left-hander Charlie Furbush will have surgery Tuesday on a partially torn rotator cuff that's been slow to heal.

Furbush hasn't pitched in the big leagues since July 7, 2015. He's expected to miss 12 to 18 months after he recently experienced soreness after throwing on back-to-back days in his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma. Furbush told reporters Wednesday he hopes to return by spring training in 2018.

The setback comes after the 6-foot-5, 215-pounder had a blood-spinning procedure earlier this year known as Regenokine Therapy, the same procedure Fred Couples (back) and Kobe Bryant (knee) underwent in recoveries from their respective injuries.
