The Rainiers’ late rally – highlighted by Stefen Romero’s three-run homer – came up just short in a 7-6 loss to Fresno. Under the orders of general manager Jerry Dipoto and the Mariners’ player development staff, starter James Paxton was limited to just 1 1/3 innings in an effort to control his overall innings count. He’ll make his normal start in the rotation in five days.
“Don’t get nervous when you see it,” Dipoto said on Wednesday. “Innings control. I’ve done this for years. We are keeping on the same path as if he’s preparing his normal day’s start but he will throw one inning.
