Mariners lefty James Paxton leaves for Minnesota early to prepare for a frigid start on Thursday

SAN FRANCISCO — While his teammates were lounging in the clubhouse and waiting for their pregame work before Wednesday night’s game vs. the Giants, James Paxton had already concluded an early workout, played some light catch and was now packing his bags and heading for the airport.

No, the Mariners hard-throwing lefty hadn’t been traded or demoted, he was simply flying to Minneapolis — the next road-trip destination — early to prepare for his start on Thursday at Target Field, which will be the Twins’ home opener.

“He’ll get a good night’s sleep and he’ll be nice and warm and toasty when we fly in early in the morning,” manager Scott Servais said.
