Mariners’ late rally falls short in a 7-5 loss to the Rangers in their Cactus League opener

Two of the Mariners’ top prospects had a chance to tie or win the game in the bottom of the ninth. With runners on first and second, outfielder Jarred Kelenic stepped to the plate with two outs. After just missing a 2-0 fastball and fouling it off, he worked the count to 3-1 against right-hander Demarcus Evans. Kelenic didn’t see another fastball, laying off breaking balls out of the strikezone on 3-1 and 3-2 to load the bases with a walk. Evans came back to strike out Cal Raleigh looking to end the game. Kelenic reached base three times in the game with a hit-by-pitch, a double and the walk.
