On Opening Night against the Cleveland Indians, the Mariners took the field for their first game on an entirely new playing surface. After a month-long project during the offseason, Safeco Field is home to an all-new playing surface for the first time since the original installation in the spring of 1999.
Although the infield and foul territory grass was replaced before the 2012 season — and the outfield grass has been patched here and there — this marked the first complete overhaul of the field in nearly 20 years.
The Mariners first game on the new playing surface was one to remember.
