Edgar Martinez makes move, but falls short in Hall-of-Fame vote

If former Mariners designated hitter Edgar Martinez's 8-year-long Hall of Fame candidacy were a collection of at-bats, Martinez hit one to the warning track this time.

Martinez, who now serves as Seattle's hitting coach after an 18-year major league playing career with the club, was named on 259 of 442 ballots (58.6 percent) for induction to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2017. The results of this year's election by the Baseball Writers' Association of America were announced on Wednesday, when former Houston Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell, former Montreal Expos outfielder Tim Raines and former Texas Rangers catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez were elected to Cooperstown's class of 2017.
