Despite highest payroll in team history, Mariners still in MLB's middle class

Among Major League's Baseball's 30 teams, the Mariners financially reside somewhere in the middle class.

According to sportrac.com, they began opening day last week with a payroll of $144,996,858. The total was a franchise record and an increase of more almost $20 million from last season, though it ranked third in the American League West behind the Los Angeles Angels ($167,302,411) and the Texas Rangers ($162,689,351). Los Angeles and Texas came in overall at 7th and 8th, respectively.

The Houston Astros paid the fourth most in the AL West, with a $99,621,707 payroll, while the Oakland Athletics were last in the division ($85,799,865).
