Court Records: Federal agents bust meth smuggler's alibi by calling his mom

(KGBT) -- Officers at the Progreso bridge were suspicious Saturday night, when a 20-year-old Houston man told them he crossed the border to visit a sick grandmother in Nuevo Progreso.

Officers had already caught Mark Anthony Romero, 20, of Houston carrying about 15.2 pounds of liquid methamphetamine hidden in bottles of Guanabana fruit extract, according to the federal criminal complaint against him.

They contacted Homeland Security Investigations -- a division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement -- which sent federal agents to the bridge.

"Romero declined to be interviewed and requested an attorney," according to the criminal complaint.
