Men’s Soccer Wins Season Opener Over Cal Poly on Friday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Freshman Dominic Vegaalban converted a penalty kick in the 80th minute to lift Santa Clara men's soccer to a 1-0 win over Cal Poly in the season opener on Friday night at Stevens Stadium.

Vegaalban slotted a left-footed shot to the lower right hand corner while the Mustangs goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado dove the other way.

Moments earlier, Alejandro Barajas' penalty kick attempt was smothered by Arce-Hurtado but an infraction on the play gave the Broncos a second chance that Vegaalban stepped up to.

The Broncos (1-0) were awarded the kick when Brady Jackson was called for a handball inside the box on a shot by Oladayo Thomas.
