Wilner: Bowl win not necessarily the cure for SJSU football

Billed as one of the worst bowl games -- not this season; ever -- the Cure Bowl lived down to the hype for three quarters, then turned interesting in the fourth.

After several wasted opportunities and briefly relinquishing its lead, San Jose State took charge in the final minutes Saturday evening and put Georgia State away. The 27-16 victory in Orlando, fueled by stout defense and two long touchdowns -- an 85-yard punt return by Tyler Ervin and a 42-yard run by quarterback Kenny Potter -- provided the Spartans with a feel-good conclusion to an otherwise disappointing season. As the players dumped Gatorade on retiring defensive coordinator Greg Robinson and coach Ron Caragher held the bowl trophy aloft, it hardly seemed to matter that the Spartans (6-7) snuck into the postseason with a losing record.
