Purdy: San Jose Sharks' Joe Thornton, a veteran of 18 seasons, still seeks first Stanley Cup finals appearance

In a fair and just world, Joe Thornton would have played in at least one Stanley Cup finals by now.

In hockey, fairness and justice give way to forecheck-created turnovers, overtime crushers, ruined expectations and Game 7 randomness. Thornton can testify about any and all of it. As one of the NHL's top 30 all-time point scorers and former league MVP with an Olympic gold medal, he is a sure-thing future Hall of Famer. But after 18 seasons, Thornton has still never laced up his skates in the Cup finals. He won't this year, either, if the Sharks fail to win Thursday night's seventh game of their series against Nashville at SAP Center.
