John Horgan: Don't expect Sharks' fiscal power play in local ice rink dilemma

Despite cautiously optimistic thoughts to the contrary, it does not appear likely that the San Jose Sharks will step in to help to preserve an ice-skating option in San Mateo/Belmont.

Financially, it does not make sense. Both ice rinks, one at Bridgepointe in San Mateo, the other along Old County Road in Belmont, are small, probably much too small; both can accommodate just one sheet of usable ice. The San Mateo facility has been shut down for three years; Belmont Iceland's final day of operation is April 30.

There have been considerable efforts to find a way to retain at least one of the rinks.
