Joe Thornton on Tomas Hertl: “He knows he’s not alone in this”

SAN JOSE — Sharks center Tomas Hertl is scheduled to have surgery Monday to repair the torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee.

After that will come months of difficult rehabilitation for Hertl, who is expected, according to general manager Doug Wilson, to be ready for the start of training camp in September.

Sharks center Joe Thornton and defenseman Radim Simek can relate, having both been through the arduous process — twice in Thornton’s case — in recent years.

Both said there will no doubt be difficult weeks and months ahead for Hertl, who was injured Wednesday, but are optimistic he can pick up his career where it left off.
