Striker from Earthquakes NASL days dies of cancer

Archie Roboostoff, one of the original members of the San Jose Earthquakes North American Soccer League team of 1974, died July 29 in Granite Bay after a two-year ordeal with esophageal cancer, said his son, Archie Roboostoff Jr. He was 67.

Roboostoff, a 1972 Olympian, grew up in the Bay Area attending Westmoor High School in Daly City. He attended Skyline College and the University of San Francisco, his son said.

A 6-foot forward, Roboostoff played for the Earthquakes in their first two NASL seasons before being traded to the San Diego Jaws. He returned to the Bay Area in 1978 to finish his professional career with the Oakland Stompers.
