SAN JOSE — The Earthquakes finally have a third goalkeeper.
San Jose has signed 6-foot-1 Matt Bersano to a multi-year contract, the team announced Monday. Bersano, 24, will back up David Bingham and Andrew Tarbell.
The Quakes (2-0-0) started the season with just the two in goal when fourth-round draft pick Auden Schilder decided to pursue a job rather than play a backup role.
Bersano played with Seattle Sounders 2 in 2016 and then auditioned as a trialist with the Quakes during preseason camp.
“He will be a valuable addition to both San Jose and Reno 1868 FC this season,” general manager Jesse Fioranelli said in a statement.
