Sacramento loses bid for MLS expansion franchise to Nashville

Sacramento’s bid for a Major League Soccer franchise took a big hit Tuesday when it was reported Nashville won the bid for an expansion franchise.

The league said Tuesday that Commission Don Garber will join political and business figures Wednesday at the Country Music Hall of Fame for a “major soccer announcement.” Multiple sources confirmed MLS will announce it’s expanding to Nashville, with the team probably beginning play in 2020.

Sacramento, Cincinnati and Detroit were all finalists under consideration by the league’s expansion committee. Sacramento’s group includes 49ers CEO Jed York, Sacramento Kings minority owner Kevin Nagle and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co.
