Coming off a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Houston and earning the fifth spot in the Western Conference, San Jose Earthquakes hoped to take the winning momentum cross-country Saturday to Washington D.C. Instead, San Jose found themselves sprinting to catch up to Eastern Conference-worst D.C. United, falling 4-0 to the team with nothing to lose.
While San Jose still has their eyes set on the post season, United’s gaze is heavily set on the 2018 season and a new stadium. The burden of the red line weighed heavily on San Jose as their opponent played more freely throughout the 90 minutes.
