San Jose Earthquakes projected starter Harold Cummings underwent a successful surgery on Friday to repair a sports hernia in his abdomen, the team announced.
Cummings, 24, signed with San Jose on Jan. 7 as the likely successor to retired center back Clarence Goodson.
Cummings has made 50 appearances for the Panama National team and has played with clubs in Panama, Columbia, Peru and Uruguay.
According to the team news release, the injury was suffered during last month’s Copa Centroamericana and aggravated during the Quakes’ first preseason match in Tucson, Arizona on Tuesday.
Cummings is expected to be sidelined 3-4 weeks.
