The San Jose Earthquakes on Friday announced that Mikael Stahre would take over the head coaching job from Chris Leitch, who would return to his full-time responsibilities as technical director, ahead of the 2018 MLS season.

Stahre, 42 years old, has been a head coach for 10 years, mostly in his native Sweden. He recently resigned from his position at BK Hacken after guiding them to a fourth place finish in the Allsvenskan, Sweden’s top tier soccer league.

"After a thorough evaluation process, we are excited that Mikael will be joining our club," said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli in a statement.
