SAN JOSE — Marco Urena scored in extra time Sunday to send the Earthquakes into the MLS Cup playoffs for the first time in five years.
The Costa Rica international saved San Jose’s season with late heroics for a dramatic 3-2 victory over Minnesota United FC when all seemed lost.
San Jose (13-14-7, 46 points) grabbed the final playoff berth on the final day of the regular season by rallying twice in the second half. The Earthquakes will head to third-place Vancouver Wednesday or Thursday for a knockout game in the Western Conference.
No play this season was bigger than Urena’s goal that deflected off a Minnesota defender in a desperate scramble in front of the net.
