How the San Jose Earthquakes are building up their defense

SAN JOSE — The Earthquakes are looking more Swedish by the moment.

San Jose has signed IF Brommapojkarna defender Joel Qwiberg, the team announced one week after hiring Swedish coach Mikael Stahre.

Qwiberg, 25, appeared in all 30 league games for the Stockholm club that won Sweden’s second-highest division this past season. He addresses an immediate need at left fullback, where winger Shea Salinas played the position to end the 2017 Major League Soccer season.

The 5-foot-7 Qwiberg signed a multiyear contract, pending receipt of a work visa and soccer’s transfer documents. Details of the deal were not released, per MLS policy.
