Against Major League Soccer’s points leaders, the Earthquakes appeared set on staying behind the ball in the hopes of bogging down Toronto FC.

But like so many that have crossed the border and visited Toronto this season, the Earthquakes’ defensive approach wore thin and they now find their playoff hopes in further jeopardy after a crushing 4-0 loss Saturday afternoon. Chris Leitch’s men fell to 3-11-1 on the road.

The opening 20 minutes saw the Earthquakes succeed in stifling Toronto FC’s forwards and even a draw looked within reach. But in the 26th minute, the floodgates opened as Earthquakes goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell misread a long Steven Beitashour cross and Victor Vazquez was able to put home the game’s opening goal.
