Earthquakes open MLS season strong with 1-0 win over Montreal

SAN JOSE — One game is too small a sample to attach much significance in an eight-month soccer season.

But the Earthquakes left a strong impression Saturday night to open the Major League Soccer season the way they promised they would.

San Jose scored a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Impact in front of a soldout crowd of 18,000 fans at Avaya Stadium to start the Jesse Fioranelli era with excitement.

Don’t forget the Quakes looked equally promising in 2016 when winning their first two games, both at Avaya. Eventually, it took a bad turn with San Jose finishing ninth in the 10-team Western Conference and missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.
