Earthquakes’ management knew coaching change was needed

SAN JOSE – In a stark reminder of how poorly this season has gone, the San Jose Earthquakes have a new goal for the final six weeks of the season – get out of last place.

“We need to set some sort of goal, obviously realistic,” interim head coach Steve Ralston said. “We can catch the next team above us.”

The Quakes (4-16-8) are four points behind Colorado (6-16-6) with six games remaining. Their position at the bottom of the table led to the firing of first-year coach Mikael Stahre on Monday, two days after a 5-1 home defeat to Sporting KC.
