KANSAS CITY, Kansas — San Jose saw its season-opening winning streak come to an end Saturday in a 2-1 road loss to Sporting Kansas City.

Despite the defeat, the Earthquakes nearly played to a draw after being punchless for the first 90 minutes.

Florian Jungwirth scored in extra time for the Quakes to pull within a goal. They then had another shot on goal and a corner kick before time expired.

After starting its season outshooting its opponents 39-9, things changed in a big way on Saturday. The Earthquakes were outshot 15-5 in the loss.

The opening goal came in the 39th minute when Benny Feilhaber delivered an arching goal from outside the box that froze goalkeeper David Bingham.
