Allan Byer, an owner of the San Francisco Giants who was instrumental in keeping the team in the city in the early 1990s, has passed away, the team announced Thursday. He was 91.

Byer, who owned a successful clothing supplier business and commercial properties, was part of the ownership group that bought the Giants from Bob Lurie in 1992 and helped build their new ballpark at King and Third streets.

"He was a leader among our ownership group known for his wit, candor, generosity, and passion for the community," said Giants acting CEO and Board Member Rob Dean in a press release.
