SF Giants will get a taste of ‘robo-umps’ at Salt River Fields. Here’s how they could impact the game.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — To understand baseball, you need to have your alphabet down. There are Ks, BBs, HBPs among a litany of acronyms and abbreviations. Soon, there will be another set of letters to add to your vocabulary: ABS.

That stands for Automated Ball-Strike System, the technology behind baseball’s rumored “robot umps.” And, at least on Monday, the time is now. The Giants will face the Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields, the lone stadium in the Cactus League equipped with the system.
