SF Giants: Gabe Kapler says Cal Ripken’s iron man streak “most respected record in professional sports”

Giants manager Gabe Kapler, well known for keeping his body toned and fit, marveled Sunday on the 25th anniversary of Cal Ripen Jr.’s consecutive games played record.

The Hall of Fame Baltimore Orioles shortstop eclipsed Lou Gehrig’s iron man streak on Sept. 6, 1995, playing in his 2,131st consecutive big league game.

Gehrig, a Yankees legend, held the mark for 56 years.

Ripken went on to extend the run to 2,632 games before sitting out the Orioles’ home finale in 1998.

“It’s the most respected record in professional sports for good reason,” Kapler said. “I think being able to show up and play every day of a seven-game stretch is a challenge.
