SF Giants drop 17 players in first round of cuts including a few notable surprises

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Giants brought 72 players to major league camp in Scottsdale this spring, but with Opening Day approaching, there’s only 55 players left vying for roster spots.

The team announced its first round of cuts on Friday as 17 players were sent to minor league camp including a few notable surprises. The group was headlined by 2015 first round pick Chris Shaw, who recorded two hits in 12 at-bats and struck out six times this spring.

Shaw and pitchers Jandel Gustave, Sam Selman and Conner Menez are the only members of the group who have appeared in a major league game with the Giants, while many others have never advanced past Double-A.
