Joe Morgan, MLB Hall of Famer who grew up in Oakland, dies at 77

Former MLB second baseman Joe Morgan, a Hall of Famer, two-time NL MVP and two-time World Series champion, died at age 77 at his home in Danville of unspecified polyneuropathy, a family spokesman said Monday.

Morgan was raised in Oakland, and attended both Castlemont High School and Oakland City College before joining the Houston Astros organization in 1962. He spent the bulk of his playing career with the Astros and Cincinnati Reds, but had brief stints with the San Francisco Giants from 1981 to 1982 and with the Oakland Athletics in 1984.

On the Giants, Morgan hit a critical home run against the Los Angeles Dodgers at the end of the 1982 regular season that kept San Francisco's rival out of the postseason.
