The Giants’ catcher took some heat on Monday when he stood in place, no reaction at all, to the sight of Bryce Harper charging the mound and triggering a brawl with pitcher Hunter Strickland. Doesn’t protocol suggest that he get in Harper’s way, or do something to calm things down?
Normally, yes. Not in this case. Strickland’s lame actions deserved no support from his teammates. There was no call for such nonsense in a close game — or any time, really. Manager Bruce Bochy admitted as much later when he said, “It looks bad.
