Having saved the Giants for San Francisco, Peter Magowan found an unusual way to celebrate

Driving to the Giants’ final game of the 1992 season was like driving to a wake. Somber. Sad. Uncertain.

That summer the team had been sold in principle to Florida investors who planned to move it to Tampa. When the day of the last game dawned, it was unclear whether the Giants would move clear across country, or if they could be saved for San Francisco.

KNBR, then as now the Giants’ flagship radio station, played an audio clip that day, recorded after the Giants’ final game in the Polo Grounds before moving to the West Coast.
