Giants unusually quiet at Rule 5 deadline, Rays DFA infielder Matt Duffy

SAN FRANCISCO — During his tenure as the Giants’ president of baseball operations, Farhan Zaidi has meticulously tinkered with, adjusted and rearranged the team’s 40-man roster.

Yet when an important roster deadline came and went on Wednesday afternoon, the Giants were uncharacteristically quiet.

Wednesday marked Major League Baseball’s deadline to protect eligible prospects from December’s Rule 5 draft and add them to 40-man rosters. Many clubs made significant transactions, including the Tampa Bay Rays, who designated former Giants fan favorite Matt Duffy for assignment to clear space for a prospect.

Others, such as the Giants, were silent.
