ST. LOUIS - While the Giants have dominated the Cardinals in the postseason, at least since the Atlee Hammaker days, these teams have always given one another a square fight in the regular season. Neither has swept the other in a series of at least three games in 16 years.
The Giants tried but failed Sunday. The Cardinals beat them 8-3 as Adam Wainwright got the better of Matt Cain in a meeting of onetime staff aces.
Cain continued his often-puzzling career-long struggle against the Cardinals, including six Giants losses in his six starts at the new Busch Stadium.
