Giants encouraged by Johnny Cueto’s latest rehab start

SAN FRANCISCO — Right-hander Johnny Cueto took another important step toward returning to the Giants in September, throwing two shutout innings in an Arizona League rehab start on Friday.

Cueto, who’s recovering from Tommy John surgery last August, gave up two singles and struck out two against the AZL Royals. One of the hits he allowed was by Bobby Witt Jr., the No. 2 pick in this year’s draft.

“He threw the ball well,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “He hit 92 (mph). He had a really good outing.”

Cueto, who will be 34 before the start of next season, was making his second AZL rehab start.
