Five things we learned on a Giants split-squad day: Pablo Sandoval’s Opening Day chances, a glimpse of the future with Joey Bart and Heliot Ramos

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Twenty-four hours after Tyler Beede and Logan Webb began their competition to capture the fifth and final spot in the Giants’ starting rotation, two underdogs also vying for the role reminded fans why it’s too soon to count them out.

In the first of two split-squad games the Giants played on Friday, right-hander Dereck Rodríguez and lefty Andrew Suárez combined to throw four shutout innings against the Royals at Surprise Stadium.
