If the veteran right-hander continues pitching like he did on Saturday, the competition won’t last much longer.

With fewer than three weeks to go until Opening Day, the Giants have a wide open race for the final spot in a rotation that was likely to include Tyler Beede before the Vanderbilt product was sidelined with an elbow injury.

“I haven’t really thought about (the competition),” Cahill said. “I just pitch when I’m told to pitch. I’m trying to be ready for pitching through the dog days of summer.
