The Giants are finally getting accustomed to being in first place in the National League West, but with the Dodgers arriving in San Francisco on Friday night, it could all change. The Giants have taken off since the All-Star Break, winning nine of eleven games and taking each of the past four series’. The Dodgers have struggled a bit, winning only six of the past thirteen games and losing their last three. Tonight they’ll both be gunning for the win, and it’ll be for more than just another W.
The Giants see this series as an opportunity to widen their lead in the NL West, and the Dodgers see it as an opportunity to demolish it. Ahead just three games in the NL West, a sweep for the Dodgers would put them tied for first. A sweep for the Giants means a six game lead. With these two teams, either is possible.
The Dodgers are still fired up about their newest acquisition Hanley Ramirez, whom they picked up from the Marlins on Wednesday. Though they’ve yet to win with Ramirez on the team, he’s managed to reach base safely six times in only two games. With Kemp, Ethier, and Ramirez at the heart of the Dodgers lineup, the Giants pitching will have to bring their A game.
Any game between these two teams is going to be a good one. The rivalry between the Giants and the Dodgers dates back to their days in New York, and there’s no doubt that the fans will be out in full force tonight. “Beat LA” will be ringing through the park, and the Giants won’t want to disappoint. The Giants have sixty-four more games to play this season, and after this series nine of them will be against the Dodgers, but if things progress the way they are there’s going to be a pennant race between these two teams, and tonight the starting pistol goes off.
The Olympics kick off in London tonight, but as far as San Franciscans are concerned tonight is about baseball. The next three days will be spent sitting on the edges of our seats, knowing that worse case scenario we’re tied for first, but hoping with all our might that we run away with it. No win is as sweet as a win against the Dodgers.
I came home for the weekend, just to catch this series. I can’t wait to suit up in my Orange Friday attire and head on down to the yard to watch some baseball. This is the magic I was raised on. Standing on my seat yelling “B-L-Yay!” and feeling the comradery as an entire stadium shouted together with one common goal; to beat LA.
