The 2017 NFL Draft is complete and the San Francisco 49ers have already landed a few coveted undrafted free agents. NFL teams start trying to sign these UDFAs the second the draft ends, and sometimes even sooner, although all of the moves typically won't officially be announced for a few days.
While most UDFAs end up being little more than camp bodies, there are players that make the 53-man roster each season. The prospects all went undrafted for a reason, but they all have the potential to make it in the NFL in some role. And sometimes, teams strike gold with an Arian Foster or Tony Romo.
We have every player the 49ers have signed below. We've also included a brief write-up about the more notable additions.
Victor Bolden, WR, Oregon State
Kendrick Bourne, WR, Eastern Washington
Matthew Breida, RB, Georgia Southern
KD Cannon, WR, Baylor
JP Flynn, OL, Montana State
Malik Golden, S, Penn State
Jimmie Gilbert, LB, Colorado
Cole Hikutini, TE, Louisville
Lorenzo Jerome, S, Saint Francis
Erik Magnuson, OT, Michigan
Nick Mullens, QB, Southern Miss
Donavin Newsom, LB, Missouri
Jihaad Pretlow, DB, Fordham
Darrell Williams, OT, Western Kentucky
The 49ers added 3 WRs, with KD Cannon the best and biggest name of the bunch. He has the speed Kyle Shanahan wants and there's a real chance he's able to make the roster. However, he needs a lot of work on his route running. Both Bolden and Bourne have some ability as well.
Magnuson and Hikutini could have been drafted and the general expectation was they would be. But they weren't add they'll have a chance to stick as backups.
Jimmie Gilbert is a tweener, but he'll try to carve out a role as a special teams player early in his career.
I was surprised Lorenzo Jerome wasn't drafted and thought he was one of the better small school prospects. He's very instinctive and I wouldn't bet against him, despite his iffy size and speed. The Niners new front office isn't tied to any of the veterans, so don't be surprised if they go with youth over experience at several spots.Back to the San Francisco 49ers Newsfeed
