Quarterback C.J. Beathard is, by all accounts, an upstanding gentleman and a great guy. He, however, is not a great quarterback. Beathard has been inactive the entire season — always a healthy scratch.
When talking about Beathard before the start of last year, I spoke about the value of backup quarterbacks. If Beathard could have improved his play, he would have allowed the Niners to recoup their investment. However, he did not improve his play to warrant a third-round pick.
As the preseason wrapped up, I explained why the 49ers simply didn’t need to keep Beathard on the roster.
