Tryout at 49ers rookie camp lands job for Rice running back

SANTA CLARA — Undrafted running back Austin Walter won himself a 49ers roster spot at last weekend’s rookie minicamp.

Walter, a Rice University all-purpose machine, announced on Instagram that he’s signed with the 49ers.

Wearing neon-green cleats, Walter (5-foot-8) flashed speed and showed his versatility among the 40 players who auditioned along with the eight-man draft class.

I’ve been playing this game since I was 3 years old and today I finally made my dreams come true. I reached the highest level of competition that this game has to offer.
