Thad Lewis is in all likelihood an inconsequential pickup for the San Francisco 49ers. It would be an absolute shocker if the 28-year old veteran started for the 49ers. Even in Colin Kaepernick is traded away or released, the 49ers still have Blaine Gabbert in tow, as well as Dylan Thompson.
Nevertheless, picking up Thad Lewis is smart for the time being. It is a low-risk one year deal that gives the 49ers an extra body in camp and a quarterback who may be able to compete for a 2nd or 3rd string spot on the roster.
