Competition, if not the talent base, appears better among the 49ers than in previous years. Midway through the exhibition season, here is a look at how the 90-man roster might get trimmed to 53 by coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch:

Starter: Brian Hoyer. Backups: C.J. Beathard, Matt Barkley
Cut: Nick Mullens.
If Beathard beats out Barkley for the No. 2 role, perhaps the 49ers only go with two quarterbacks.
